..Falling Into Photos..

I love pictures. I love fall. There’s no better combination in my opinion than those two.  Add in a fall challenge and I’m in heaven! Fall is hands down one of the best seasons for photography – the colors, the colors, the colors!!!  Did I mention the colors?  Just breathtaking!  I’m also new to the photo taking world.  I’ve been wanting to learn for many years now but have never had the time or the proper equipment to do so.  So when my sister asked me if I wanted her old Canon Rebel DSLR I couldn’t say no!  I just won’t say WHEN she actually gave me that camera though.. 😉

My first challenge is called Project 52.  I basically take photos once a week for a year.  I wanted to do a 365 challenge but there’s too much going on right now and I didn’t want to overwhelm myself right off the bat.  I may take pictures more than once a week or maybe even less (hopefully not!), learn a bunch of new techniques along the way and hopefully get good (and bad) criticisms on my photos.

Without further ado..

Kids (well, babies) are by far the most difficult to photograph.  I really struggle with how to capture Gabriel without it being blurry or disjointed.  I’ve read to keep the shutter speed at around 1/125 for children but it doesn’t always happen indoors with the lack of light.  I’m trying to work with it but it’s a big learning curve for me.  If only he would just.sit.still!!!  At least for a minute…or two…

Having said that, older children are great!  Sofia is awesome to photograph (when she’s in the mood that is!!) and we’ve been able to capture a lot of great shots.  She doesn’t like to admit it, but she enjoys looking at the pictures and posing.

I just realized all my photos posted are to the ‘right’ of view.  This was NOT deliberate and I promise, I DO have other views.  They just didn’t turn out..

What happens when you roll around in the leaves, weeds, and grass to shoot.  It’s an itchy job, but I’ll take it!

..Sofiaisms..day eleven..

Its been awhile since I last sat down and wrote my last post. I’ve been battling a cold that seems to have set up a permanent home. Not to mention, the weather has been so gloomy, cold and snowy the last two days all I want to do is sleep all day. Getting up early for work is a challenge. But I do it.

Tonight I was able to spend some quality one-on-one time with Sofia while giving her a bath. We washed her hair, played, cut her nails and chatted. The girl never stops talking. I swear her brain is constantly ticking. We don’t just talk about one subject either, discussion and questions are scattered all over the place. It’s tough to keep up when you’re tired! It’s still my favourite time of day.

While cutting nails…

I don’t know how to name well.  I get yours name and Daddy’s wrong.  But never Mya’s and my puppies.  But sometimes I call Mya, Poopers.

Trying to sway her way…

Do I have to have a bath?  Do you have to wash my hair?  How bout you just brush it?

..Sofiaisms, day eleven..
Not crying, I swear…

Mom, I didn’t cry today or yesterday.  I was just pretending.

Looking at our iPad pictures…

Mom, I’m never going to delete you.

Saying goodnight…

Mommy you’re the best.  And Daddy is the best too.

..The Little Things, part two..

Four posts in two days.  It’s definitely more than I’m used to but I’m feeling the need to write tonight.  After almost a full day of goodness, I was about to leave work when I got a call that unsettled me.  I won’t go into details but I set off for home in poor spirits.  After getting on the bus, we sat in traffic for what seemed like hours as construction has officially started on the worst road on my commute.  To make things worse, it’s the second time that road has been worked on in two years.  Makes no sense to me!  Then I get home and Mya throws up on the carpet.  Why, why the carpet?!  The laminate flooring was literally centimetres away.  This also doesn’t make much sense to me.  Plus, to top it all off, I’m still under the weather with my cold.  AND it’s still chilly outside.  Blah.

Needless to say, I’m feeling a bit down tonight.  To cheer myself up and get out of my ‘funk’, I decided to write a second list of the little things that make me happy.  In the grand scheme of things, my problems really aren’t that bad, just fueled by a domino-effect of negativity.

..The Little Things, part two..

  • Having Quiznos for dinner.  Super delicious and requires no effort whatsoever.
  • Explaining to people at work that my name starts with a ‘K’ and my last name a ‘C’.  They find it hilarious!
  • Being mistaken as a 22 year old.  Everyone always told me I’d appreciate this one day and that day is finally here!
  • Having supportive coworkers and supervisor.
  • Laughing so hard all that comes out is uncontrollable snorting.

..The Little Things, part two..

  • Getting my first work paycheque.  Thursday will be the best day ever.
  • Chocolate peanut butter.  Have I mentioned this before???
  • Homemade Coconut Chocolate Chip Cookies.  So delicious!
  • Watching Young and The Restless before dinner.  It’s my new guilty pleasure.
  • Homemade vegetable soup.  Also so delicious and perfect cold comfort food.
  • Teaching Sofia how to write her name properly.  She seems to struggle with the concept of writing left-to-right and excels at writing right-to-left and backwards but we’re working on it.

..The Little Things, part two..

  • Snuggling with Mya for a couple minutes.  Once Dad gets home I cease to exist.
  • My neighbours tulips.  They finally growing, turning green, and soon to bloom.  I’m so excited!  They’re going to be beautiful.
  • A husky sticking his head out the car window as they drive by.  Pure enjoyment and satisfaction written all over its face.
  • Eating dinner with my little family.
  • Dancing to a catchy song down the street, not caring who sees or what people think.
  • Discussing Sofia’s day and how she ‘only watched 3 shows today, Mom!’

..The Little Things, part two..

When I’m sick I always have to have blankets on.  My feet and legs get cold.

I’m afraid of monkeys, but not tigers.  And little bit afraid of big dogs, but not Mya.

When you eat, like soup, you can throw up in your bed.  I did on Friday, when I was 3.

..The Little Things..

A friend’s recent Facebook post got me thinking about the things in life that make us happy. Just the little things, like someone opening a door for you or a stranger saying ‘good morning’ and smiling as they pass by. I think we’re often so busy, stressed, and distracted we don’t take the time to see these things and really appreciate their greatness.

I decided to write out a list of the things that make me happy. Most of these are the feelings I’ve been experiencing lately and events I’ve gone through in the past few days.

What inspires you to smile on a day-to-day basis?

  • Green grass sprouting and snow melting away.
  • The sun shining!
  • Smell of freshly brewed coffee.
  • No longer wearing winter boots.
  • Going a step further and wearing no socks with my shoes!
  • The sound of children’s laughter (I may be biased, but Sofia’s laugh is the most contagious giggle I’ve ever heard!)
  • Mya sleeping like a person, with her head on the pillow and body under the sheets

  • Going to bed early and waking up feeling refreshed.
  • Not having to drive myself home during rush hour traffic.
  • Chatting with my bus friends.
  • The smell after it rains.
  • Sunscreen!
  • Discovering Sofia has been on my twitter and her recent tweet has been shared to others.

  • Giggle fests over nothing.
  • Joking around with my new coworkers and boy, can we have some pretty silly conversations. It’s such a fun atmosphere!
  • Reading magazines on my iPad. It just makes me happy.
  • Looking through old photos and reminiscing about good times with friends and family.
  • The smell of a swimming pool.
  • Milk chocolate peanut butter. With pretzels. Or spread on waffles. Or eaten directly out of the jar.

  • Getting addicted to a new book or series.
  • Hearing Sofia yell and run for me when I get home from work. It’s the best sound in the world.
  • Meeting old colleagues for lunch and catching up.
  • Listening to Mya snore and chase in her sleep.
  • Going through old school books from classes you really enjoyed.
  • The smell of baby powder.

  • Hugging my little girl and feeling her arms tight around my neck. BEST feeling in the world!
  • Hearing Sofia whisper that she loves us, always and forever. And Mya too. And everyone she knows. And herself too.
  • Finding a funny or quirky license plate and telling Jordan about it.
  • Dancing for no reason….to New Kids On The Block…and any other tune Sofia has chosen as her song of the day.
  • Getting messages from friends and family.
  • Knowing that tomorrow is a new day and we can start all over again…

Sofia, inspecting my outfit as I’m getting dressed in the morning, criticising why I decided to wear my suede boots to work…

But you can’t jump in any puddles with ‘dos!!

..Buns of Cinnamon..

So much of what I bake has cinnamon in it. It’s almost like a reflex, I bring out the KitchenAid mixer and kick up the cinnamon. There’s just something about it I love…the smell, the taste…it just makes me happy. Maybe that’s a weird thing to say about a spice, but that’s just me. I’m weird and wonderful. That being said, those that are allergic or have aversions, not everything I make contains cinnamon,so do not fret!  You can still eat safely at my house.

I was reading my new Looneyspoons cookbook the other night and came across this quote, which I instantly loved (and not just because its from Ellen DeGeneres):

You know, I really don’t need buns of steel. I’d be happy with buns of cinnamon.

I feel the same way, Ellen! Well, except I honestly wouldn’t mind buns of steel as well as buns of cinnamon.  Is it possible to have both?  Oooohh, how I wish!

If you’re looking for an excellent cinnamon treat and you like scones, check out this recipe.  The scones are so good I had to stop making them as we’d go through the entire batch in two days.  Not exactly working well for my new eating healthy diet. That being said, I’m still tempted to make them, but afraid I’ll just eat them anyway.  They’re just THAT good! It’s also a great way to use up those overripe bananas you have sitting around.

The last time I made them, I combined the cinnamon-sugar filling in with the rest of the dough, and it tasted just as good, and was a ton of less work when dividing up the dough into wedges.  I also froze the dough for awhile to make cutting easier.  I’m all about ease with baking!

Today’s going to be a good day. How do I know? Well, it’s barely 10:30 and…

– Sofia and I threw a dance party to Call Me Maybe, Gangnam Style, and Mumford Sons in the living room. In our pjs.

– We’ve played with tape and wrestled with the tape ripper thingy and decorated our bodies (particularly, our faces).

– Been instructed that its time for my shower, so Sofia can watch a movie (back story here, but I’ve instituted no tv mornings but said she could watch while I showered. I digress).

Mom, I ‘sink its time you showered

– We’ve painted Mya. She didn’t enjoy it but it was enjoyable for us. Well, at least Sofia.

Might I add that we’re still in our pjs?  Yup.  It’s awesome….but will change shortly.  There are some advantages to being at home full time…
